How Do I Use the RENZ PBS-340 Modular Comb Opener?

The RENZ PBS-340 modular comb opener is a stand-alone comb-opening device that can be used in conjunction with the DTP 340 M modular binding machine or as a second binding station for a full-function comb binding machine. The PBS-340 is capable of opening plastic binding combs between 3/16″ and 2″ in diameter, and can even accommodate oversized combs up to 14″ in length (24 loops). This model can be mounted directly onto the DTP 340 M to create an all-in-one binding solution, or used with a specialized holder for stand-alone use. Below are step-by-step instructions for using the RENZ PBS-340 comb opener:

  1. Before beginning, ensure that the handle is pushed to the rear of the machine and the comb opener is in its closed position.
  2. Load the plastic binding comb onto the comb opener so that the solid portion of the spine faces the rear of the machine and is flush against the metal tines. The loops of the comb should fall between the tines with the open side of the comb facing up.
  3. Open the binding comb by pulling the handle forward until the comb is approximately two-thirds open.
  4. Loosen the screw on the front of the machine and slide it to the right until it stops. Tighten the screw to set the position of the opener. This will prevent you from accidentally opening the comb too far, taking the guesswork out of opening combs and improving your overall efficiency.
  5. Place the punched pages of your book onto the open comb. If your document is especially thick, you may find it easier to insert the pages in small sets instead of trying to insert them all at once.
  6. Close the comb binding spine by pushing the handle back to the starting position.
  7. Lift the book upward to remove it from the comb opener and complete the binding process.

How Do I Bind with the RENZ ECO 360 Comfort Wire Binding Machine?

The RENZ ECO 360 Comfort wire binding machine is a 2:1 pitch wire binder that is designed for medium-to-large office use, with a user-friendly electric punching mechanism that is able to punch up to 30 sheets at a time. The ECO 360 Comfort features a built-in manual wire closer that can accommodate twin-loop binding spines up to 1-1/4″ in diameter. Below are step-by-step instructions for binding books using the RENZ ECO 360 Comfort wire binder:

  1. Use the measuring scale located toward the rear of the machine to determine the diameter of the wire binding spine that will be required based on the thickness of your book.
  2. Set the wire closer to match the diameter of your wire. The wire closer is adjusted using the sliding scale located on top of the closer itself. Begin by loosening the screw knob, then slide the knob until it is aligned with the correct diameter and tighten it to finalize the adjustment.
  3. Use the depth margin control knob to set the amount of space between the edge of the paper and the punched holes. As a guideline, thick documents tend to have larger punching margins than thin documents.
  4. Adjust the side guide to correspond to the sheet size of your document. Loosen the screw, re-position the guide, and tighten the screw to prevent the guide from shifting during use.
  5. Disengage any punching dies that are needed to prevent holes from being partially-punched along the ends of your sheets. A die can be disengaged by pulling the corresponding pin straight upward until it stops. A previously-disengaged die can be re-engaged by pushing the pin back into the machine.
  6. Set the position of the closing rail based on the size of the binding wire that will be used. The closing rail has two positions – one that is used for wires 3/16″ – 1″ in diameter and the other for wires 1-1/8″ – 1-1/2″ in diameter. To adjust the closing rail, push the buttons located on both sides of the rail and turn as necessary.
  7. Place the wire binding spine onto the wire holder. The wire holder allows you to immediately insert punched pages onto the wire for increased productivity.
  8. Arrange the pages of your book so that the back cover is placed on top of the front cover and the faces are against one another. Turn the entire stack over so that the covers are at the bottom. Placing them in this order will allow you to conceal the seam of the closed wire within the book.
  9. Insert up to 30 sheets (based on 20 lb. paper) into the punching channel, aligning the pages against the side guide. Note: If you are punching thick cardstock or PVC covers, punch them separately from the internal pages of your document.
  10. Press the foot pedal to start the motor and punch through the inserted sheets. After punching, thread your sheets onto the binding wire.
  11. Repeat steps 9 – 10 until your document has been completely punched and inserted onto the wire.
  12. Lift the twin-loop wire off of the wire holder and place it into the wire closer. The open side of the wire should face toward the machine and sit flush against the back of the closer.
  13. Pull the closer handle forward to close the wire spine. Return the handle to its upright position in order to open the wire closer.
  14. Remove your book from the wire closer and turn the back cover around to the back of the book to complete the binding process.

Tips:

  • To keep the machine clean and free of debris, it is recommended that you periodically wipe it clean with a dry or slightly moist cloth. Do not use harsh cleaners or solvents, as they may remove the labels on the machine.
  • Empty the waste drawer frequently during use. Attempting to punch while the waste drawer is full can lead to jams or cause damage to the machine.

Note: If you are punching 10 mil PVC covers, you can only punch size covers at a time to prevent jams and excessive machine wear.
  8. Press the foot pedal to activate the electric punch. Release the foot pedal and remove the punched sheets.
  9. Continue punching the pages of your document – working in sets of up to 28 sheets – until all pages have been punched.
  10. Place a plastic binding comb onto the built-in comb opener. It should be inserted so that the solid side of the spine is against the metal prongs of the comb opener and the loops sit between them. The open side of the comb should be facing up.
  11. Gently pull the binding lever (located on the left side of the machine) forward to open the tines of the binding comb. Once the comb has been adequately opened to insert the pages of your document, release the handle to keep it in its open position.
  12. Jog your document by lightly tapping it against a table or other flat surface to align the holes. Align the punched holes with the open tines of the comb, then insert your book onto the comb (with the front cover facing down). Note: If you are binding a particularly large book, you may find that it is easier to insert the pages onto the comb if you work in smaller sets (starting from the front cover and working back).
  13. After all of the pages of your book have been inserted onto the 19-ring binding comb, push the binding lever back to its original position. This will allow the tines of the comb to close, securing the sheets within the spine.
